The class of English composition is very powerful because
it will have a lasting effect in all my college experience. Each essay taught
me something different; for example, the first essay was very useful because I
had to use a different research method like the interview, this method pushed
me outside of my comfort zone because I was used to using Google as my main
tool of research. The second essay was challenging because it was about poetry,
but I learned many things like analyzing poems that I would had never read
before, this open my mind to a different way to express ideas and opinions
about one problem through this art. The third essay was very difficult to me
because I was completely free to write about a topic of interest but I didn’t
know how to prove my point easily, I learned that I need to research even more
to prove my arguments.
There are many skills that I acquired during this semester,
I believe the most important is researching. The ability to research will be
very useful for my future classes, I learned to research through all the essays
by using the keywords in the databases to look for specific content, I learned
that Valencia College has different databases with a specific topic for each one.
I also learned about organization, this was very important to me because I’m a
methodical person who likes to follow a pattern. The organization taught by the
professor was awesome, a main idea, then a context, a quote, interpretation,
analysis, and transitional phrases. This was excellent to apply to all my
essays because they help to build a solid paper.
The areas where I need to work more are the works cited
and the connection of my ideas to my thesis statement. Sometimes the works
cited page can be difficult to create because I get my information from
different types of sources such as articles or a book online, and each of them
has a specific way to cite. The connection between main ideas and the thesis can
be hard to show sometimes, I forget about this and I just talk about my main
idea and I forget to show how it relates to my thesis that I’m trying to prove.
The ability to write essays is very useful to my career
because as a computer scientist I will be require to write about what I have
done or created. When you write code to create a new program you need to put
comments that show what every little piece of code does, the reason for this is
to make the job of fixing errors or post-analysis a little bit easier. Also, if
I want to explain my work I have to show the connection between every single
idea and how it relates to solve the main problem. For example, a program that
helps people in a community to organize events can have many parts like the
program that people will see, the server, the database, the interaction between
user and the interface, if I have to explain this to a coworker or just to
publish a paper about what I have created, I will have to write and connect
ideas while also supporting ideas with research.
